Why is Iron infusion important?
Our bodies require iron, which is essential for producing hemoglobin—the component of red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body. Iron is crucial for muscle strength, energy, and cognitive function. When iron levels are low, you may feel fatigued and struggle with everyday tasks.
A decrease in body iron leads to reduced hemoglobin levels, resulting in a condition known as iron deficiency anemia.
Why do I need IV Iron?
The most common way to treat iron deficiency anemia is by taking iron in the form of a tablet or liquid. This works well for most people, but some may need iron delivered directly into their body through a vein. This method is called an intravenous (IV) iron infusion. The iron is given through a small plastic tube (cannula) and dripped into your vein; it contains iron, not blood.
How much iron do
you need?
Your doctor or midwife will determine the right amount for you. If you receive IV iron, they may recommend either a second infusion or taking iron tablets in the following months. If you choose to take oral iron, wait at least a week after the infusion to start. It can take a few weeks for the iron to have its full effect, and your doctor or midwife will do a blood test to check how you're responding.
